Welcome to the website

The International Saxon Academy of Singers - Hartenfels Castle in Torgau is designed to address the needs and interests of vocal music majors studying in German Conservatories as well as students presently attending universities in other countries. Young singers from abroad who intend to apply to universities or Conservatories in Germany are provided with optimal opportunities to acquaint themselves with the culture and the language of Germany. The Academy is also explicitly directed toward young professionals at the beginning of their careers.

The history of the town of Torgau plays an important role in course content, which will include:
German Lied from its emergence to modern-day, Oratorio in the German language, German opera, and other forms of German contemporary vocal music. This Renaissance town with its representative Hartenfels Castle boasts a long and historically significant tradition in regard to German musical heritage:

• Martin Luther and Johann Walter worked in Torgau
• Heinrich Schütz‘s opera “Daphne” premiered in Torgau In 1627
• Major International Music encyclopedias regard this to be the very first German opera.
